Activity Description
A Different Angle: Fresh and Creative Cultural Perspectives on Maths
Where does Maths come from? It comes from us!
Where do we come from? We come from Africa…
In this creative dance workshop, participants will, in the spirit of ancient approaches to geometry and architecture, explore 2 and 3D shapes and the notion of measurement using the body. Working with lengths of skipping rope or soft chord, they will make 2 and 3D shapes using ‘anchor points’ on their and others bodies. They will then create 2D shapes/symbols/letters/patterns on the floor including accurate hieroglyphs.
These exercises link to a duet for a dancer and a rope, ‘DNA: Destiny’s Natural Ally’, made for New Walk Museum during Black History Month 1999. The performance, now documented in Leicester City's archive, re-connects historically Western ideas of Africa with science as well as art, re-connects Egypt within the African continent as a whole and offers a positive view of the contribution of African people to our city and our world.
